Prep Guide: Dance & Artistic Lighting Sessions

We’re excited to capture your movement and artistry!

To make the most of your session, here’s everything you need to know before you arrive:

Welcome to our studio! We’re so excited to have you in for your dance or athletic session. Our goal is to create bold, modern, and artistic images that showcase your movement, strength, and expression.

Our studio features two unique spaces—the dramatic Black Marley and the clean, modern White Marley + Cyclorama—along with a selection of color paper backgrounds to help bring your vision to life.

Poses & Movement

To make the most of your session, come prepared with 8–10 poses or movements. Here’s how to organize them:

1. Signature Lines

  • Include your favorite extensions, arm lines, and body shapes.

  • Examples: arabesques, penchés, attitude lines, or any pose that defines your style.

2. Jumps & Leaps

  • Plan a few dynamic moves you can consistently hit.

  • Examples: sautés, jetés, grand jetés, or any jump that shows height and energy.

3. Spins & Turns

  • Include controlled turns or pirouettes that highlight balance and control.

  • Examples: fouettés, chainés, or simple single turns.

4. Expressive Gestures

  • Poses that convey emotion or storytelling.

  • Examples: arms reaching, floor work, head/hand gestures, or playful movement.

5. Floor Work & Shapes

  • Include any seated or lying poses that create strong shapes or lines.

  • Examples: splits, kneeling poses, or creative floor shapes.

Tips:

  • Sketch, print, or save images of your poses as a reference.

  • Prioritize poses that feel natural and that you can hold with control.

  • We’ll guide you with lighting, angles, and composition, but having these ready makes your session focused and intentional.

What to Wear/Bring

1. Outfits

  • Choose outfits that feel like “you” and highlight your movement.

  • Bring 2–3 options for variety.

  • Avoid large logos or busy patterns—they can distract from the artistry.

  • Include dancewear, leotards, tights, shorts, flowy pieces, or anything that complements your poses.

2. Shoes & Footwear

  • Bring your dance shoes: pointe shoes, jazz shoes, or sneakers depending on your style.

  • Barefoot is great for floor work or contemporary looks.

3. Props & Accessories

  • Hats, gloves, scarves, ribbons, or other props that enhance your movement or storytelling.

  • Anything you want incorporated creatively into your session is welcome!

4. Practical Tips

  • Make sure your outfits and props allow free movement.

  • Hair and makeup should reflect the look you want in your images.

  • Hydrate and stretch beforehand to feel and perform your best.

Additional Prep Tips for a Successful Session

1. Hair & Makeup

  • Decide if you want a natural look or a stage-ready, bold style.

  • Hair should be secured for jumps or turns if needed, but loose hair can work for flowing movement.

2. Hydration & Energy

  • Drink water before your session to feel energized and prevent fatigue.

  • A light snack beforehand can help maintain energy, especially for high-movement sessions.

3. Warm-Up & Stretching

  • Arrive a few minutes early to stretch and warm up your muscles.

  • Being warmed up reduces risk of injury and helps poses look effortless.

4. Mindset & Focus

  • Bring your ideas, creativity, and confidence—your energy shows in the images!

  • Don’t stress about perfection; we’ll guide you and help sculpt the poses with lighting and composition.

5. Reference Material

  • Bring photos, videos, or sketches of poses or moves you want to capture.

  • It helps us understand your style and ensures we hit your favorite looks.

6. Collaboration

  • Be ready to take direction and experiment—some of the most striking images happen spontaneously.

  • Props, accessories, and creative ideas are encouraged—this is your session!

after our session

In regards to your photos, as we sort through all of the images from our session, we choose to edit the ones that best represent you. We love to give you the images where there are beautiful expressions, and priceless moments being captured. While we do not edit and/or share every image from our session, we do strive to deliver the best photo(s) of each pose.

We will aim to have your gallery portraits edited and ready within 2 - 3 weeks of our session. You will receive your photos on a personalized, password protected, online gallery. This allows for the quickest delivery of the images, for you to easily view and share your photos.

From there you are welcome to order print products through us, or you can create prints with your own preferred lab. You have full printing rights to these digital images. We suggest a professional lab and not Drug Store quality.

We can’t wait to create something amazing together! This session is a collaboration—your energy, movement, and ideas combined with our lighting and guidance will result in artistic, powerful, and modern dance portraits that truly showcase your talent. Bring your creativity, confidence, and excitement, and let’s make images you’ll love.
